Broadcast of the exhibition Aravrit from the Center for Empathy in Education and Society at Kibbutzim College of Education.

  • Vered Ginsburg, Director, Empathy Museum, Kibbutzim College of Education

ARAVRIt

Aravrit is an experimental writing system presenting a set of hybrid letters merging Hebrew and Arabic .

Each new letter is composed of the top half of an Arabic letter a the bottom half of a Hebrew letter so in In order to read it- any Hebrew reader would look at the bottom half of the letters, and an Arabic reader would look at the top half. The identifying features of each letter were retained, however, in both languages, the fusion required some compromises. It was crucial to maintain readability and have a minimal detriment to the original script.

Through stitching together two scripts, Aravrit sends a message of life together: one can read the language he/she chooses, without ignoring the other one, which is always present.

Liron Lavi Turkenich is an independent typeface designer and researcher based in Israel. She holds a B.Des in Visual Communications from Shenkar College in Tel Aviv and an MA in Typeface Design from University of Reading, UK.

Liron designs multilingual typefaces for international companies, specialising in Hebrew and Amharic. Among them is Aravrit, a new hybrid writing system which merges Hebrew and Arabic, and has received wide recognition for its ingenuity and scope. In addition to design, she writes about letterforms, interviews designers, teaches, and researches Hebrew type design. Liron is a senior level events coordinator at ATypI, organising the yearly conference and its routine activities. She also shares her knowledge and experiences in lectures and workshops around the world. Liron loves travelling, talking with people, and searching for typographic treasures in dusty archives.

Neurons, Genes and Multiculturalism

Guest lecturer:  Dr Mai Nguyen-Phuong-Mai

Moderators: Dr. Elaine Hoter and  Dr. Sandy Habib

Do we learn cultural values or do we inherit them via DNA? Does race exist? How come do we have so many cultures? Are we the product of our culture or are we its master? These are some of the intriguing questions that this lecture will try to answer. Let’s explore the fascinating links between our cultural diversity and our brain.

יMs Phuong-Mai Nguyen is Associate Professor at AMSIB where she has been working since 2008. She does research on, and teaches Cross-Cultural Management and Middle East studies.

Phuong-Mai Nguyen is involved in diverse research projects. Her research interests include Diversity Management, Asian corporate culture, Middle East and Islamic culture, Face-work negotiation, and Instructional Design. She sits on several research advisory boards, including ELLTA (Leadership and Learning in the Asian century).

Phuong-Mai Nguyen holds a Master in Educational Science and Curriculum Design from Twente University, and a PhD in Intercultural Communication from Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Before taking the academic path, she took part in various training and fellowships such as journalism programs at World Press Institute (USA), BBC (Thailand) and Reuter (UK).

With her own company Culture Move, she works closely to many businesses and companies to whom she delivers tailor-made training programs. She co-designed various business simulation tools such as Cultural Detective® and Diversophy® which are frequently used in corporate training programs. Since 2015, she also coaches diverse governmental bodies on Radicalization.

Phuong-Mai Nguyen started her career as a journalist in Vietnam and became managing editor for a mainstream newspaper. She still works as a freelance writer and her work has appeared on BBC, Jerusalem Post, Islamic Monthly, The Big Round Table, Illume, Your Middle East among others.  Her fourth book was released in March 2014, detailing an intellectual account while conducting a journey through the Middle East, tracing the path of Islam from where it began, city by city, westwards to Africa and eastwards to Asia.

Her latest book is entitled Intercultural Communication: An Interdisciplinary Approach: When Neurons, Genes, and Evolution Joined the Discourse and her lecture today will be based on this topic.

The project called “room” is an online platform that enables personal acquaintance between citizens coming from different backgrounds in Israel: secular, religious, Arab, Jewish, periphery, center, kibbutzim and cities. The goal is to encourage meaningful dialogue between students from different communities in Israeli society.
The “rooms” are virtual for authentic discourse, and expressing the variety of voices in society in order to promote understanding and tolerance.

Abstract

As more academic institutions develop MOOC courses, there is a need to make the courses more interactive and to reflect and incorporate 21st century learning skills.  This presentation summarizes the dilemmas and deliberations in building a unique MOOC course offering a different model that emphasizes teaching and learning adapted to the 21st century, and is transmitted in a virtual environment. Seven teacher colleges joined to develop a MOOC course in multiculturalism. The teaching staff comprise of technological and pedagogical experts as well as lecturers in the field of multiculturalism. The course was developed and adapted in three languages – Hebrew, Arabic and English. The new model integrates cutting-edge pedagogy and technology and is based upon collaborative experiential learning. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first MOOC course in the world designed for a virtual setting that establishes collaboration, simulations and role-play in a MOOC context.
